Açı Libraries: Learning Spaces of the Future

Açı Libraries are modern learning centers that adopt the 21st-century understanding of learning, enrich educational programs, support students’ individual learning processes, and foster a love of reading and lifelong learning habits. Supported by technology and digital resources, they aim to strengthen students’ research skills, encourage adherence to the principles of academic integrity, and develop their critical thinking abilities.

Our libraries provide a wide range of printed and digital resources suitable for all age groups, connecting students to global literature, science, art, and culture with content that is updated and diversified throughout the year.

Preschool: The First Steps of Discovery

At our Bahçeköy, Kemerburgaz, and Levent campuses, we offer a total of 11,040 printed materials specially selected for preschool students. These resources are organized in accordance with students’ ages and developmental levels

  • New Publications: Each year, new books from both local and international sources are added.
  • Theme Books: Books selected to align with educational themes are available in classroom libraries, and students can access them any time.
  • Reading Habits: Students develop a habit of regular reading from an early age by borrowing books from classroom libraries.
  • Digital Resources: With accounts defined through the applications we use, students can access online books and complete related activities.
  • Oxford Reading Tree (ORT): Named ORT, our English reading tree program includes books suitable for each age group, along with related activities.

Primary School: Meeting Knowledge with Self-Regulation

At our Akatlar and Sarıyer campuses, we have a total of 70,000 printed and digital resources. Of these resources, 50% are in English, providing students with access to a wide variety of books and magazines in both Turkish and English.

  • Activities:

    • Book Week events, author talks, book clubs, termly library bulletins, and book promotions.
    • Reading hours and recess activities.
  • Technology – Supported Research: Students utilize international databases and digital tools for their project-based learning.
  • Lesson Integration: Our libraries host unique reading and research activities that are directly connected to lesson contents.
  • Student Clubs: To foster a love of reading and learning and to improve students’ writing skills, two student clubs are active:
  • Oxford Reading Tree (ORT): Our English reading tree program, known as ORT, includes books tailored for each age group along with related activities. This reading program is also supported by the Raz-Reading platform. The reading program is also supported by the “Raz” reading platform.
  • OKA: Age-appropriate books on the “OKA” reading platform are used within the Turkish curriculum and to enrich students’ individual reading processes.
  • Social Responsibility: Books donated to our library throughout the year are sent to other schools in need as part of our “Our Social Responsibility Projects” Social Responsibility Projects. On April 23rd, our students gift books to fellow students from different cities and schools.

Middle School: Research and Sharing

Açı Middle School Library offers students a rich learning environment with a collection of 22,500 materials in English, Turkish, French, and Spanish.

  • Digital Subscriptions: We provide access to international databases and multilingual magazine subscriptions such as TÜBİTAK, Flocabulary, and Britannica. Digital learning platforms like MYON and Achieve 3000 are available to support reading programs, while the SEBİT platform is used to enrich the curriculum.
  • Research and Technology: Students use the library for research lessons and project work, benefiting from both digital and printed resources with the help of iPads.
  • Book Club: As part of our elective courses, the Book Club aims to:
    * Foster a love of reading among students.
    * Raise awareness about the importance of reading.
    * Encourage students to utilize the school library more effectively and actively.
  • * Book Week events and author talks.
    * Reading hours.
    * Termly library bulletins and book promotions.
  • Social Responsibility:
    1. Second-Hand Book Campaign:
    – During the final week of December, the school organizes a fair where students donate their used books to the “Second-Hand Book Campaign.”
    – The money raised via this campaign are donated to the Contemporary Life Support Association’s “Anadolu’da Bir Kızım Var, Öğretmen Olacak” (A Girl from Anatolia Will Become a Teacher) project.
    2. “A Book for My Sibling” Initiative:
    – During Book Week, students purchase books from book fairs for themselves and can choose to donate a book to sibling schools by placing it into a donation box.
  • Books donated to our library throughout the year are sent to libraries of other schools in need as part of our Social Responsibility Projects.

High School: Raising Global Citizens

Açı High School provides students with rich resources and technological tools to help them develop a global perspective.

  • Digital Reading: Through iPad-supported education, students engage with literary works from various cultures in both English and Turkish classes.
  • Interdisciplinary Resource Use: Students enrich their reading and research processes with thematic resources available in class libraries related to each subject.
  • Monthly Publications: Students are inspired by magazine subscriptions focused on literature, science, and art.
